Journey
Hailing from South Africa, Mthobisi Brandon Cele celebrated professionally by his stage moniker Brandon Leo, is a dynamic contemporary hip-hop artist, singer, and songwriter who has built a steady reputation within the country’s modern urban music scene. Recognized for his distinct musical blueprint, which seamlessly fuses the grit of regional trap music with the smooth, melodic sensibilities of alternative R&B, his music explores themes of personal ambition, relationships, and everyday street life.
He officially burst onto the mainstream radar in March 2018 with the release of his breakout single, "Mention 2.0." Driven by a high-profile feature from the Durban trap group Golden Black, the song was licensed and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Africa, granting him significant national exposure. He continued to expand his industry footprint through key collaborations, including a memorable joint effort on the track "Inyuku" alongside the late artist Tumi Tladi.
As a solo artist, Leo is highly celebrated for his ability to craft immersive, narrative-driven bodies of work. He laid his creative foundations with his 2020 debut EP, “Hi, Mthobisi,” (named directly after his birth name), and subsequently maintained strong digital momentum with hits like "Ambitions" and "Loyal AF." He further solidified his standing with his 2025 6-track EP, What Could “Have Been,” featuring popular cuts like "Kasiville" and "Bucket List." He remains an active force consistently shaping the future sound of South African hip-hop.
